Azuris Aurum is a Montréal-based ensemble forging sounds from modern
Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Electronica and Hip-Hop. Assembled in the fall of
2002, these young musicians have been working diligently to achieve a
sound that is highly energetic, compelling and unique. Already a staple on the
Canadian east coast circuit, within its short existence Azuris Aurum has appeared
at the Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax, N.S., (July, 2005), l'Off festival de jazz
de Montréal (June, 2005), the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival in Fredericton, N.B.,
(September, 2004), Paddle Fest in Saint Andrews, N.B. (May, 2004), and the Charlottetown
Youth Music Festival, P.E.I. (August, 2003). Adding to that a barrage of club dates,
the steady sale of their début album, Current Mechanics, and a newly compiled live sampler
DVD, Azuris Aurum is becoming a very powerful force on the improvisational circuit.
The Azuris songbook is composed almost entirely of original material that is well crafted,
dynamic and precisely arranged, yet still leaves plenty of room for free interpretation and
sonic development. What sets this band apart is its unrelenting quest to create and explore
new compositional and improvisational forms. On stage as well as in the studio, Azuris Aurum
eloquently integrates into their performance "live real-time music composition:" the cohesive
development of a sonic world created from nothing and wholly improvised. Azuris Aurum has
constructed a palace of sonority built upon a foundation of lush harmonic extensions, while
intricate and intertwining melodies adorn the walls. All this sits comfortably beneath a canopy
of rhythms that are at once funky, frantic, floating, and groovy.
This is a group of open-minded and open-eared musicians equally well versed in the jazz language
as they are in the retro funk/fusion schools. Not content to simply recycle old sounds, Azuris is
also in tune with modern developments in electronic music and the underground scene. However,
rather than simply genre-hopping, Azuris reaches deep into the pools of each member's experience to
create an ocean of musical affluence‹-a collective of ever-expanding ideas. This translates into an
immediately distinguishable sound that tastefully balances the experimental with the accessible.
Azuris Aurum represents young musical minds from all across Canada. The oldest member clocks in at
25 years, yet as an ensemble they play like seasoned veterans. Armed with the force of thousands of
hours of personal practice time, they now bring together their artillery of chops and ideas to forge
a weapon of mass construction. With no end in sight, Azuris hopes to continue to bring their unique
sounds to different parts of the world while continually striving for a level of chemistry that can
be felt on and off the stage.
